On this day: Saxophone Day

Thursday, 6th November 2014 by

From Bill Clinton to Kenny G, November 6th is annual celebration for lovers of all things to do with the saxophone. The date commemorates the 1814 birth of Adolphe Sax, the Belgian musician who designed the saxophone, originally intended for use in military bands and classical orchestras, though later becoming popular with jazz musicians. Sax is honoured with a street named after him, and a large saxophone statue in his home town of Dinant in the Namur province of Belgium.

Not content to name just one instrument after himself, Sax also created a number of lesser known instruments such as the saxhorn, saxtromba and saxtuba, which was quite the immense object, as you can see in the image on his Wikipedia page.
