The Gateway Arch, St. Louis

Saturday, 9th April 2005 by James

A very popular submission has been the The Gateway Arch or rather it’s massive shadow, ‘raydancer’ notes that is it the tallest national monument is the United States at 630 feet and is just as wide. If you look West a bit you’ll find the first of our new category, Stadiums (we’ve got loads to post!). It’s apparently the Busch Stadium (St. Louis Cardinals), although one submitter noted that it is due to be demolished.

“caknuck” also points out the comparison of the highly-developed downtown with the heavily-industrialized & much-poorer East St. Louis, Illinois directly across the river. Finally, “Moxie Dan” points out the Anheuser Busch brewery (the largest beer brewery in the world) is just to the south.

be careful you aren’t looking at Edward Jones Dome, which is also a elbow’s length away from the arch.

Also note just north of the arch is more Large Type for you on the roof of a TWA building!

Just across the river from the Arch and little north is the Casino Queen riverboat, made famous by a Wilco song from their first album.

The “TWA” building you refer to is in fact the Edward Jones dome. The images of St. Louis seem to be about 2.5 to 3 years old.

The stadium is about to be “Demolished”. There is a new stadium being built right now, right next to the existing one. After this season is over, they will demolish Busch stadium to make room for the other half of the new stadium. Somehow, they plan on finishing the other half during the winter off-season so that the next season will be played in the new one.

Aha, thanks for clearing that up! Not even being american or having visited the US yet, I wouldn’t have known that!

The TWA building you guys are refering to is yes indeed the Edward Jones Dome, but it is definitely NOT being demolished. It no longer has TWA on the roof, since it was renamed the Edward Jones Dome. The St. Louis Rams play in this indoor stadium. The one being demolished is Busch Stadium. This is the last seasons the St Louis Cardinals wil play baseball at Busch Stadium, and a new one is currently being built. Then the old will will be demolished. Both the new and the old baseball staduims are outside stadiums , no roofs…

Few places are cooler than the St. Louis arch on a clear day!

Also, just to the west of Busch Stadium is a big round, white oval, which is the Savvis Center arena, home to the NHL’s St. Louis Blues.

Ok, Look back at my comment about Mt. Rushmore which was the previous map photo, then look at this one, and tell me that someone at Google does not have a seriously twisted sense of humor.

    Or is it just me???

Of course, I do have a twisted sense of humor.

The gateway Arch is very beautiful.

  12. 12. someone says:

The arch is actually twice as tall as it is wide, not equal height and width as the review states.
If it were as tall as it it is wide it would be circle, not arch.

And now, it’s in Street View
